maxillofacial surgery

If you are preparing to undergo oral surgery in the near future, you probably have a bit of apprehension about how it will go and what the actual procedure will entail. This is especially true for people who are undergoing a procedure under general or intravenous anesthesia because it seems like a more “serious” type of surgery. You can rest assured that if you are going to undergo dental surgery, the procedure will be done by a highly educated and qualified oral surgeon with years of experience. That does not mean, however, that you should not have some say in who your surgeon is. If you are looking for a surgeon to perform your oral surgery, here are a few qualities you should look for.

  • Highly experienced- It probably goes without saying that the person you want performing your surgery is someone who has done the same or similar procedure hundreds of times on hundreds of different patients with extremely high success rates. You will also want to make sure that the surgeon was educated at an accredited school and has plenty of time working in a practice. This will not only make you feel the most at ease, but will ensure you get the best results from your surgery as well.
  • Good at explaining the details- If you are nervous and have a lot of questions, you will want to find an oral surgeon who is skilled at explaining the details of a procedure to someone who is not in theĀ maxillofacial surgery field. As with any medical field, there is a lot of jargon and confusing terminology, but you will want to find a surgeon who can help you understand what all that really means in the context of your procedure.
  • Patient- This goes hand in hand with the above point, but if you have a lot of questions or apprehension, you may start to feel a bit neurotic as you ask for information. Remember, you have every right to ask as many questions as you need to feel comfortable, and it is important that your surgeon have the utmost patience with you and truly cares about making you feel comfortable and confident as well.
  • Kind- This might seem a bit obvious, but you want to work with an oral surgeon who is kind and gives you a good, positive vibe. On the day of the procedure, it is important that you feel relaxed and confident, and this will be more likely if you get a good, positive feeling from your surgeon. If when meeting a surgeon, they make you feel scared, uneasy or unimportant, they are probably not the right fit for you.

Undergoing surgery is scary enough without having to worry about the person who performs the surgery. You have every right to get involved in the process of choosing the right oral surgeon for you because it is your body and your comfort is the most important thing as you go through the process of surgery and healing.
